Senior Citizen

Requirements for Additional Homestead Exemption for Persons Age 65 and Older

  1. You must be 65 years of age or older on January 1 of the current tax year.
  2. Sworn statement of adjusted gross income of household and return (DR501SC) must be completed annually and filed with the Monroe County Property Appraisers Office between January 1 and March 1.
  3. Items that will be accepted as PROOF OF AGE:

    Certified copy of Birth Certificate

    Florida Identification Card

    Florida Drivers License

    Passport

    Life Insurance Policy in effect for more than two years, bearing the birth date

    Permanent Resident Card (formerly known as Alien Registration Card)

    Certified School Records

    Marriage Certificate

    Certified Census Record

  4. The total adjusted gross income for all household members for the prior year cannot exceed $24,214.  (This amount is subject to change yearly and will be determined by the Department of Revenue in mid January of each Tax Roll year.)

Applicants that do not file an IRS Return

  1. List itemized income for each person residing in household.
  2. Submit a copy of Social Security Statement (SSA-1099); and all other income documents (ex. 1099's for taxable interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, annuities) for each household member.
  3. An IRS Form 4506 (Request for Copy or Transcript of Tax Form) will be given to you by the Property Appraiser’s Office.
  4. Attach copy of proof of age.

Applicants that file Federal Income Tax Return Form 1040 series

  1. List itemized income for each person residing in household.
  2. Submit copy of the prior year Federal Income Tax Return(s) and wage and income statement(s) (W-2 Form), for each household member.
  3. Attach copy of proof of age.

The application of Sworn Statement of Adjusted Gross Income of Household and Return (DR501SC) must be completed and returned to the Property Appraiser’s Office by March 1. All documents supporting the income as stated on the Sworn Statement should be submitted by May 1 and no further documentation will be accepted after June 1.

Due to an amendment to the legislature, if you have previously filed for this exemption you no longer need to submit proof of income unless required by the Property Appraiser’s Office.
